WALKING, CLIMBING and MOUNTAIN BIKING

Walking

The valley has several cable cars, chair lifts and mountain tramways which can be used to access the mountains and the many well-marked trails. The Grand Routes such as the Tour of Mont Blanc and the Tour du Pays offer a very real challenge to the serious hiker, whilst the casual walker can also experience the wonder of gentle exercise taken in the clear mountain air. Those who prefer to explore under the watchful care of a local guide can easily employ the services of a personal guide or join a group for a trip to the mountains in safety.
Notable walks include:

Le Lac Blanc: (2352 metres). A beautiful photogenic lake surrounded by the Mont Blanc range. Walking time 1 hr 45 mins from the top of the Flegere cable car (from Chamonix). Overnight refuge and snacks by day.

The Grand Balcon North and South: Superb walks along the valley's balcony. Suitable for all standards of walkers.

Climbing

The Chamonix valley is a spectacular area in which you can climb snow, rock, ice or mixed routes, as well as work on your technique in one of the indoor climbing centres. Numerous cable cars and trains can whisk you up to the permanent snow level from where you can enjoy tackling a vast range of faces, ridges and peaks.
The area is the home of Europe's highest summit - Mont Blanc at 4807 metres (16000 ft). The Alpine Retreat is ideally situated for an ascent and your hosts Rob and Suzanne are happy to share the experiences of their ascent.

Mountain Biking

The area has become a haven for mountain bikers with its miles of trails. There is everything from beginners tracks to serious routes. Some of Europe's most technically challenging mountain biking trails are located here, but with a very civilized ascent with your bike on one of the many cable cars. Everest-in-a-day is the ultimate challenge, with many hopefuls trying to ride down the height of Everest in a combination of eye-opening descents.
